What we did:

Working closely with the Intel and Dublin City Council teams we developed an innovative flood management system. We interviewed dozens of users, researchers and stakeholders and built up our knowledge of the challenges and requirements. The system we created included:

• A complex ‘heterogeneous sensor network’ collecting data from sensors all over Dublin city and county, Wicklow and the Irish Sea
• Integration with data from several third party systems. This allowed us to avoid multiple logins and having data on several screens. We now collate all data and present it in one place.
• A data processing system to collect, collate and monitor sensor data
• An alerting system that sent operators notifications by email and SMS whenever certain rainfall, or flooding thresholds had been hit.
• A data export system to allow for detailed analysis and modelling of data outside the system
• Mapping and graphing of all sensors and sensor data
• A full map-based visualisation system
• A complex graphing solution to allow interaction with multiple sets of cross-related data
• A video including interviews with Intel engineers, Dublin City Manager, Flood Resilience Engineers, Flood and Drainage Operatives and a citizen who had experienced flooding in the past.

A multidisciplinary approach was required involving UX designers, Graphic Designers, Data Systems Engineers, Programmers and various domain experts.
